METİN ATEŞ

Born in Ayvalik in 1954, Metin Ates finished high school at Izmir Karsiyaka College and went on to study at Istanbul State School of Applied Fine Arts -presently known as Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts- in 1973. Through the course of his four-year fine arts education, he painted at Mengu Ertel’s studio, during which time he met the famed caricaturist named Mistik from whom he gained knowledge about cartoons.

 

After graduating from fine arts school in 1977, he started working at the graphics department of the Ministry of Tourism in Ankara. The two years he spent working here, he focused mainly on poster design. The various graphic design competitions he entered won him 17 awards, including The Golden Orange. The design he submitted for the poster competition held by the Turkish Archeologists Association won first place.

 

He has held 20 solo exhibitions and has participated in 10 group exhibitions to date. Most recently, he has held a solo exhibition at the Nis Art Gallery in 2019.

 

His work is mainly centered on graphic design and posters, and he also uses the knowledge and experience he has gained over the years to turn towards painting acrylics on canvas, starting with classic paintings and moving on to more abstract pieces.
